New high modulus glass fibers and ultra high modulus glass-ceramic fibers were made from high and low viscosity melts by melt spinning/drawing. They offer high value-in-use in a wide range of polymer and metal matrix composites markets, including infrastructure and transportation. In polymer matrix composites, they offer up to 75% of the stiffness and 25% of the projected cost relative to that of incumbent carbon fibers. In metal matrix composites, melt spun glass-ceramic fibers offer the same strength and stiffness as incumbent reinforcing fibers at < 2% of their cost. These glass and glass-ceramic fibers exhibit glassy fracture, the latter an additional nanocrystalline phase. This paper evaluates the fundamental relationships between structures and properties and proposes both new fibers for commercialization and new theoretical concepts for exploration.
