The 1973 energy crisis was the impetus for the Sunshine Project of the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) which is exploring new energy resources such as solar, coal, geothermal and hydrogen energies. The development of a solar thermal power generation system (STPS), an on-going project begun in 1974, has reached the point of completing two pilot plants at Nio, Kagawa, Japan. This paper describes the research and developmental work on a distributed type system, the plane-parabolic type solar thermal power generation system, and pilot plant operating experience. STPS produces high temperature steam from solar energy which generates electricity by driving turbines. The method of power generation is similar to that of a conventional power plant except for the steam generator, that is the boiler. As plant efficiency depends greatly on steam conditions, it is desirable to use high temperature superheated steam even in STPS.
