The Vostochnaya Central Washery to be commissioned in the Karaganda coalfield will process run-of-mine coals of the particular grades shown in Table 1. The coking concentrate will be produced from the screenings (<13 mm), while the remainder (>13 mm) is to be processed into a graded concentrate for use as domestic boiler fuel, according to the plans. However, in view of the shortage of caking coals with a limited volatile matter yield, the merits of producing these concentrates are no longer apparent. Better uses can be found for the Karaganda grade OS coals, and VUKhIN has accordingly made a special study of the supply base for the Vostochnaya Central Washery. The cleanability indices were determined for blends containing both the large coal size fractions (50-13 mm) and the screenings (<13 mm); the coking properties of concentrates produced from the <13 mm and <50 mm were also compared. It was concluded that: (1) Pilot commercial trials have shown that the 50-13 mm concentrate planned for use as a fuel can be blended with the <13 mm concentrate without impairing its coking properties (although the coarse concentrate has a higher ash of approx. = 11.9% db). (2) The upper size limit on coals to be cleaned for the production of coking concentrate should be raised to 50 mm. This would increase the output of coking concentrate by about 560,000 tons/year. (3) Estimates indicate that the charge preparation cost would be reduced by 0.51 roubles/ton below the current figure. At an annual charge consumption rate of 4,100,000 tons, this would yield a saving of around 2 million roubles. The inclusion of concentrate from the Vostochnaya Central Washery in carbonization blends will further increase the yield of saleable coke.
