The first-order second-moment uncertainty analysis coupled with the Enhanced Trickle-Down model has been applied to Lakes (acidic) and Lake Panther (neutral) in the Adirondack Park, New York to assess the surface water response to acid deposition and to quantify the propagation of the uncertainty from the inputs of the model for the next 50 years beginning 1978. A simple mass balance equation was used to determine the important reactions which occur in Lakes Woods and Panther. The mass balance requires only three input parameters: deposition ion concentration, lake ion concentration, and an evapoconcentration factor applicable to the watersheds. It was determined that the most important alkalizing reaction in both of the lakes was the production of base cations by ion exchange and chemical weathering. Dry deposition of sulfate was important to the sulfate balance in both of the lakes. Since nitrate and ammonium ion inputs in both of the lakes are largely assimilated by terrestrial and aquatic plants, the net effect is alkalizing to both of the lakes.
