Metro Chicago's study of energy alternatives for wastewater treatment

Journal Article · · J. Water Pollut. Control Fed.; (United States)

Three energy conservation measures were implemented by the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago, Ill., in sewage and wastewater management operations. In-house steam generation, digester gas utilization, and utilization of purchased electric energy reduced plant energy demands by 44%. Existing steam boiler turbine systems were replaced with electric-motor-based systems operating with purchased electricity. This eliminated the need for heat drying, which is the most energy-intensive sludge process. (2 graphs, 6 tables)
