Oxygen withdrawal, copper valency, and interface reaction for Fe/La/sub 1. 85/Sr/sub 0. 15/CuO/sub 4/

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)
High-resolution x-ray photoemission spectroscopy was used to study reactive interface formation for Fe adatoms deposited onto the high-temperature superconductor La/sub 1.85/Sr/sub 0.15/CuO/sub 4/. Fe deposition reduces the emission within approx. =3 eV of the Fermi level, indicating disruption of the hybrid Cu 3d/sub x//sub <2/-y/sup =/--O 2p/sub x//sub ,//sub y/ states responsible for superconductivity. Strong reaction of Fe adatoms with substrate oxygen is observed for coverages ranging from 0.25 to 8 A, and oxygen is withdrawn to form Fe-O. The chemical states of Cu are selectively changed with a quenching of the Cu/sup 2+/ configuration but the persistence of the Cu/sup 1+/ configuration.
