Paramagnetism of some terbium chalcogenides

We investigated the magnetic properties of the compounds TbX, Tb/sub 2/X/sub 3/, TbX/sub 2/ (X = S, Se, Te) at temperatures ranging from 77 to 300 K. The samples of terbium chalcogenides were synthesized in sealed ampuls evacuated to 10/sup -4/ Pa. The composition of the samples obtained was monitored by x-ray phase analysis. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility was measured by the ponderomotive method using an inclination balance in a magnetic field. For terbium monochalcogenides the magnetic susceptibility x/sub 293/ and the paramagnetic temperature Theta/sub p/ decrease in the series S-Se-Te. Analogous behavior is observed for the terbium sesqui (Tb/sub 2/X/sub 3/) and dichalcogenides (TbX/sub 2/).
