Synthesis, structure, and properties of Ca sub 2 ZnN sub 2

Journal Article · · Journal of Solid State Chemistry; (USA)
The authors report the synthesis and physical properties of the new ternary nitride Ca{sub 2}ZnN{sub 2}, prepared by the reaction of Ca{sub 3}N{sub 2} and Zn in N{sub 2} gas at 680{degree}C. The structure, determined by x-ray powder diffraction and refined by Rietveld profile analysis, is tetragonal (I4/mmm) with a = 3.5835(4) {angstrom}, c = 12.6583(7) {angstrom}, and Z = 2. The structure features condensed nitrogen-centered metal octahedra and a linear coordination of Zn by two nitrogen atoms. Conductivity and magnetic measurements show that Ca{sub 2}ZnN{sub 2} is insulating and diamagnetic.
