Executive summary. Volume 2. [Gas from unconventional sources]

Book ·
OSTI ID:6290134
This summary volume of the National Petroleum Council's report on unconventional gas sources discusses findings with regard to gas from coal seams, from Devonian shale, from geopressured brines, and from tight gas reservoirs. Within each volume, the resource base, state of the art of recovery technology, potential reserves and production, constraints to development, and uncertainties associated with each source are examined. The study presents estimates of what could happen with the development of unconventional gas sources under specific assumed technical and economic circumstances. The conclusion is that in-place gas resources of coal seams, Devonian shale, and tight gas reservoirs are very large; an estimate of the in-place gas resource of geopressured brines is not offered, although it is considered to be very large. For each source, reserve additions and production rates are calculated as functions of gas prices, rates of return, and levels of technology. The conclusion is that natural gas from unconventional sources could make a significant contribution to future US gas supply.
