Production of HO/sub 2/ in the radiolysis of water with heavy ions

Production of HO/sub 2/ (hydroperoxy radicals) was investigated using /sup 1/H, /sup 4/He, /sup 7/Li, /sup 9/Be, /sup 11/B, /sup 12/C, and /sup 16/O ions up to 5 MeV/nucleon, and /sup 12/C, /sup 16/O, and /sup 58/Ni ions up to 16 MeV/nucleon and /sup 20/Ne ions. HO/sub 2/ yield increases with increasing particle charge and can be considerably greater than with fast electrons. Differential HO/sub 2/ yield decreases with increasing particle energy. (DLC)
