An expression is obtained for the error in calculating the reaction-zone temperature of an optically thin diffusional flame due to neglecting the radiant heat transfer. It is shown that this error is greatest in pyrotechnical and hydrocarbon flames with a high soot concentration, and may amount to several hundred degrees.
