Isomerization of 4-methyl-. delta. /sup 4/-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride on palladium-alumina catalysts
4-Methyl-..delta../sup 4/-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (MTHPA) used in the production of epoxide and polyester resins, has a drawback in that it is a solid, which complicates its use in formulations. In this work attempts were undertaken to obtain liquid isomeric MTHPA mixtures enriched in MHHPA anhydride, on palladium alumina catalyst regenerable under process conditions with low content of the active component. Isomerization of MTHPA was realized in a catalytic flow reactor in a nitrogen flux. The high activity of palladium alumina catalysts in obtaining liquid mixtures of MTHPA isomers was shown. The catalyzate contains four times more fully hydrogenated anhydride product than industrial mixtures. Palladium alumina catalysts can be used under industrial conditions as active and regenerable contact catalysts.
