Morphological surface changes in the terminal bronchiolar region of NO/sub 2/-exposed rat lung

Journal Article · · Environ. Res.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6288881
Lungs of 1-month-old rats, exposed to 15 ppM NO/sub 2/ for 1, 2, or 7 days were scanned via electron microscopy. Loss of cilia from terminal bronchiolar epithelium, more brush cells, more macrophages and more debris after 24 hr were observed. Proliferation of type 2 and decrease in type 1 cells after 2 days were observed. Smooth, non-ciliated epithelium with blebbing after 7 days was observed. Disruption of the clearing mechanism may be the cause eventual blockage of small airways. Terminal bronchioles normally have a rough appearance whereas the alveolar duct is smooth.
