Nanosecond photolysis of ethyl benzyl ketone. Unusual effect of viscosity on geminal recombination

Nanosecond laser photolysis was used to study the geminal recombination of PhCH/sub 2/ and O-C-C/sub 2/H/sub 5/ radicals formed in the photodissociation of ethyl benzyl ketone in hexane, isopropanol, and mixtures of hexane with mineral oil. One of the processes occurring in the solvent cage is geminal recombination leading to the formation of a quinoid structure as a result of rotational diffusion of radicals. It was shown that an increase of the viscosity of the medium leads to a decrease of the proportion of geminal recombination of this type.
