Construction of diatomic potential curves

The Clinton function /sub n/(R) is proposed as a test for the applicability range of the model potential U/sub n/(R). The analysis is based on the asymptote of the exact /sub n/(R) for large and small R in the region of R = R/sub e/ together with the virial theorem. The proposed test does not require complicated calculations.
