Five volunteers inhaled coal dust and calcium carbonate (among others) for 2-min periods. Aerosols generated from powder and were separated in a gravity flask filtration system (< 5 ..mu..m diameter particles yielded). Inhalation amounts were approx. 10 mg coal dust and 20 mg calcium carbonate. There was a mean increase in R/sub L/ from 1.83 to 3.29 cm H/sub 2/O per liter-sec. There was an increase in R/sub a/ from 1.46 to 2.63 5 to 10 min after initial inhalation with a subsequent decrease (though not necessarily to control value). A high variability with standard deviation approaching means was noted.
