Long drill for coal probing and pillar removal

The US Bureau of Mines' probe drill system is discussed. The objective of the program is to provide a machine for economically drilling probe holes in coal mines to check for possible water flood or gas hazards ahead of the face. The system uses a lightweight air-powered drill that mounts on a lightweight frame anchored to the face of an expandable packer. The drill is portable and can be broken down to small components for ease of transportation. The probe drill system was successfully demonstrated in tests at the Kocher Coal Company's Porter mine at Tower City, Pennsylvania. Penetration rates exceeding 4 feet/minute in anthracite coal were typical in mine tests. The drill demonstrated its ability to drill through hard spots and rock seams which occurred frequently in all testing done, and it also demonstrated that it can drill long holes as several holes over 80 feet deep were drilled.
