The authors describe a system for manipulation and analysis of nucleic acid and protein sequence data by computer. This implementation is based on their experiences in designing and supplying such software to hundreds of scientists since 1982. The environment they will present is a radical departure from previous concepts for molecular biology software, and is based on the needs and desires expressed by their large and diverse user group. The environment design has implications not only for the manner in which molecular biology is done on a computer, but also for what can be done. They encounter limits of current databases and algorithms before they encounter the limits of the environment, which suggests directions for growth. They will also present examples of common problems faced by molecular biologists in data acquisition and analysis, discuss various methods used to address them, and present what they consider the best solutions to them.
