This work is part of the First International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) Field Experiment (FIFE), an international land-surface-atmosphere experiment aimed at improving the way climate models represent energy, water, heat, and carbon exchanges, and improving the utilization of satellite based remote sensing to monitor such parameters. This paper reports on cross calibration measurements between instruments used to measure bidirectional reflectances on the FIFE site. Two ground based and one helicopter based Spectron Engineering SE590, one ground and one helicopter based Barnes modular multiband radiometer, and the portable instrument PARABOLA were compared. The bidirectional reflectances for the different instruments were found to be quite comparable. The spectral vegetation indexes were found to have a strong dependence on the solar viewing angle and on the sensor viewing angle.
