Compositions and processes for breaking petroleum emulsions

New chemical compositions used in the treatment of oil-water emulsions such as petroleum emulsions are described. These compositions consist of water-insoluble partially oil-soluble products of the reaction of an epoxide of a polyphenol and an adduct obtained by reacting ethylene oxide with a higher alkylene oxide adduct of a compound from the group consisting of hydroxy-hydrocarbyl compounds and hydroxyhydrocarbylether compounds. These compounds contain up to 12 carbon atoms and 1 to 3 hydroxyl groups. The oxyalkylene groups of these higher alkylene oxide adduct are from the group consisting of oxypropylene, oxybutylene and mixtures of oxypropylene and oxybutylene. (5 claims)
