Study of neutrino-electron scattering and coherent neutral pion production

Neutral current elastic nu/sub /e scattering was studied in the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber filled with a heavy neon mixture. A total of eleven events of the type nu/sub / + e nu/sub / + e was observed. When these events were combined with eleven events found in an earlier run, the cross section for this process was found to be 1.52 +/- 0.39 x 10 US E/sub nu//GeV cmS. This result is in agreement with the prediction of the Weinberg-Salam model with sinS(theta w) = 0.23. Thirty-two events containing only a single isolated el conversion pair were also found. Combining these with twenty-three similar events found in an earlier run it was found that the sample could be explained by neutral current coherent single pion production. This is the first experimental observation of coherent neutral pion production by high energy neutrinos.
