Glomar Challenger

The drill-ship Glomar Challenger was christened by Global Marine Inc., at ceremonies held at Levingston Ship-building Company yards at Orange, Texas. The 10,500-ton self-propelled, dynamically positioned drilling ship has a length of 400 ft, beam of 65 ft, draft of 20 ft and a supply capacity of 6000 tons. Under a subcontract with Scripps, Global Marine will conduct drilling operations from the Glomar Challenger across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, working in water depths of from 3,000 to 20,000 ft. Purpose of the project is to obtain long cores of ocean floor material over a broad geographic distribution. Penetrations of up to 2,500 ft will be made in the ocean sediments. The twin-screw, diesel-electric powered Global Challenger will travel at a speed of approximately 12.5 knots. The dynamically positioned drilling vessel will maintain station by means of her own screws and 4 thrusters located in the bow and stern. She is the largest commercial vessel to be equipped with dynamic positioning.
