The effect of alumina addition on bending strength and fracture toughness in ZrO{sub 2}-3mol% Y{sub 2}O{sub 3} (PSZ) was studied by a combination of three point bending tests, an indentation technique, dilatometry, and transmission electron microscopy. The addition of alumina to PSZ improves these mechanical properties. This improvement is not related to the variation in density and grain size caused by the addition of alumina, but is a result of the formation of an amorphous phase located at the grain boundaries. This phase contains alumina, silica and yttria.
