The Hibberd Pool in the South Cuyama Field, Calif., contains a small reservoir which permits field experimentation for various oil recovery techniques in a heterogeneous sand. Since discovery of oil in Nov. 1950, 3 different techniques have been utilized to recover oil from this reservoir--primary depletion, secondary recovery by waterflood, and tertiary recovery of miscible slug flood with the injection of propane, dry gas and water. The cumulative oil production to Jan. 1, 1967 is 3,534,929 bbl or a recovery factor of 50.2%. The estimated ultimate waterflood recovey of 3,318,000 bbl of oil would have been recovered by mid April 1964. Oil production in excess of 3,318,000 bbl is attributed to miscible slug process and classified as tertiary reserves. Tertiary oil production through Dec. 1966 has been 216,929 bbl and ultimate tertiary production is extrapolated to be 300,000 bbl with a recovery factor of 51.4%. This tertiary process has already recovered 2 bbl of oil for 1 bbl of propane remaining in the reservoir. The ratio of ultimate recovery should exceed 3 bbl of oil to 1 bbl of propane.
