Experience in the operation of biological effluent-purification facilities at carbonization plants has shown that they can be operated under a stable regime and exhibit high bacterial activity if the incoming effluent is carefully and adequately purified of tars and oils, which have a lethal effect on phenol-decomposing microorganism cultures. It has been shown that it is possible to reduce the tar content of effluents from 22 to 2 to 3 mg/liter and the phenol content from 760 to 300 mg/liter by using run-of-mine grade OS coal (<50 mm fraction) as an adsorbent.
