Effect of pulsed ionizing radiation on the luminescence and absorption spectra of high-speed plastic scintillators

Three plastic scintillators based on polystyrene and four scintillators based on a copolymer of styrene with methyl methacrylate were tested under a pulsed electron beam for radiation-induced changes in their luminescence and absorption spectra. The purpose of the study was to assess the scintillators as candidate materials for plastic scintillation detectors. Comparisons were drawn for luminescence duration of the candidate scintillators both before and after irradiation and also against the luminescence duration of the serially manufactured plastic scintillator PPS-1. Light transmittance properties were also compared. The dependence of the tested properties on irradiation dose was evaluated.
