The possibility of instability and phase transition in a metal is investigated in a model with the lattice replaced by a homogeneous charge-compensating background. It is shown that the state of such a system can become unstable near a singularity of the density of states on the Fermi surface under the condition that the average value of the Landau function, computed on the extremal cross section of the Fermi surface, is negative. Unlike the usual situation, with decreasing temperature the system goes from the liquid to the gaseous phase.
