The first part of this two-part article summarises the results of a 10-year research and plant testing programme involving mining companies throughout the world. The programme was aimed at developing a better understanding of the influence of slurry rheology on the performance of mineral and coal grinding circuits. Part 1 presents the basic concepts identified, including typical laboratory results showing the influence on grinding behaviour of controlled changes in per cent solids, particle size, slurry temperature and viscosity control chemicals.
