Measurements of the properties of Rh/sup I/(CO)/sub 2/ supported on Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ have been made using transmission ir spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy and isotopic exchange. The following conclusions are reached: (1) the surface species is Rh/sup I/(CO)/sub 2/ (C/sub 2v/) since its spectroscopic properties are virtually identical to synthetic Rh/sup I/(CO)/sub 2/ species prepared by Knozinger, Thornton and Wolfe; in addition, the expected number of isotopic Rh/sup I/(CO)/sub 2/ species is observed by ir spectroscopy; (2) some of the Rh/sup I/(CO)/sub 2/ species exist primarily in pores which cause diffusion of CO to be the rate limiting process in the exchange reaction at the Rh/sup I/ site; and (3) the use of infrared spectroscopy to monitor isotopic exchange processes on supported metal surfaces can give valuable insights into the kinetic nature of the surface processes involved as well as insight into the structure of the species present.
