Pollution control and heat recovery

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6283342
This patent describes the process for regenerating heat and avoiding pollution from fossil fuel flue gases comprising: cooling the flue gases to below about 400/sup 0/F by heat exchange with preheated combustion air; further cooling the gases, condensing moisture and removing particulate by (a) contacting the gases with a massive bed of sized, acid-resistant aggregate including myriad tortuous paths; (b) the paths aiding smog formation with fine particulates as nuclei; (c) forming a film of condensing moisture on the aggregate, the film absorbing sulphur dioxide from the gases; (d) the bed having sufficient horizontal cross-section to reduce gas velocity, dropping substantial particulates near the top of the bed; recovering the substantial particulates; recovering fine particulates, condensate and absorbed sulphur dioxide; discharging the cleaned flue gas at a near-ambient temperature; and utilizing heat absorbed in the bed to preheat combustion air, where fuel is conserved.
