Preliminary design of a 10 Mwe OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) powerplant and 50 Mwe OTEC power modules by Westinghouse Electric Corp. under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy uses power systems based on optimized closed ammonia cycles. Both 10 Mw and 50 Mw power modules can be compatible for experimental and prototype OTEC plants up to 400 Mw. Proven technology is used, with sub-elements sized for rail-shipment to the outfitting site. Numerous alternative designs were evaluated; it appears that OTEC platforms of reinforced and post-tensioned concrete will offer significant savings over steel. Features of major plant components, and working fluid, warm and cold water, and plant control systems are presented.
