High condensing recuperative furnace

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6282567
This patent describes a method for heating fluid in a furnace comprising the steps of: (a) providing a recuperative heat exchanger having at least one conduit which is generally continuously upwardly directed from an inlet end to an outlet end; (b) locating a burner proximate the inlet end for introducing hot combustion gases into the inlet; (c) locating reservoir means under the inlet and adjacent the burner; (d) providing means for contacting the heat exchanger with a fluid to be heated; (e) operating the contacting means; and (f) operating the burner at a given heat output level where the fluid cools the hot combustion products such that a substantial majority of the water vapor in the combustion products condenses within the heat exchanger. A steady state cycle of condensation and evaporization is maintained where condensate flows back downward at least one conduit into the reservoir at the same heat output from the burner. It then re-evaporates condensate in the reservoir means and in at least one conduit for subsequent condensing in at least one conduit.
