The interactions of (H/sub 2/Os(CO)/sub 4/) and of (H/sub 4/Os/sub 4/(CO)/sub 12/) with the basic MgO support have been examined by CP/MAS /sup 13/C NMR spectroscopy in conjunction with infrared spectroscopy and extraction experiments. Comparison of the spectra of the surface species with those of model compounds, in solution and in the solid state, indicates a strong localized absorbate-support interaction of the mononuclear complex (HOs(CO)/sub 4/)/sup -/ to a surface Mg/sup 2 +/ ion through the oxygen of a carbonyl ligand, whereas there is a weak ionic association of the large tetranuclear anion (H/sub 3/Os/sub 4/(CO)/sub 12/)..sqrt.. with the surface.
