Fuel storage facility conceptual design plan

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6279013
Although the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) and the Clinch River Breeder Reactor (CRBR) will each have provision for on-site storage of spent fuel, the facilities are necessarily limited by building space and by economic factors dictated by the plant designs. Thus, at some time, each reactor must discharge spent fuel to an off-site storage facility in order to continue operation. The Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) has estimated that the FFTF will need to commence off-site shipment of fuel in March 1981. ERDA has therefore authorized the design of the Fuel Storage Facility (FSF) at HEDL with a target date for construction completion of March 1981. The FSF storage vessel is based on the CRBR ex-vessel storage tank (EVST) design and is compatible with the FFTF fuel handling equipment. The facility can make use of the ongoing CRBR design effort which will yield a minimum cost facility that will meet all of the requirements for extended (up to five years capability) storage of FFTF fuel.
