Tricone bit selection using sonic logs

Formation hardness and compressive strength are shown to correlate with calculated shear travel time. This has lead to the development of a correlation between economic roller cone bit selection and calculated shear travel time. Upper and lower shear travel time limits are then placed on steel tooth and tungsten carbide bits to minimize the cost per foot of drilling given formations.
