Oil for America: Sohio Petroleum gears up for increased exploration efforts

The Sohio Petroleum Company Division is based in San Francisco; it is comprised of exploration and production staffs, with engineering and other support units. In 1978, the Exploration Division opened regional offices in San Franciso, Oklahoma City, Houston, and Denver. The staffs are poised to hunt petroleum in Alaska and in the Lower 48, around the Gulf Coast, and essentially, anywhere west of the Mississippi - onshore and offshore. Sohio Petroleum Company has two major production units: the Continental US Production Division, Sohio's former oil and gas organization in the Lower 48 and the Sohio-BP Alaska Production Division, responsible for drilling and operating the Prudhoe Bay west sector. With emphasis on Prudhoe Bay, the company is examining all the measures that will be needed to sustain the Prudhoe reservoir at its present production rate of 1.2 million barrels of oil per day. One plan is to pump water into the reservoir to boost its pressure. The role of the geologist, areas being developed onshore and offshore, and the economics of these ventures are discussed.
