Coal slurry pipelines in the 1980's

Conference · · Combustion; (United States)
OSTI ID:6276916
New coal slurry pipelines are expected in China, the USSR, South Africa, Canada, Poland, Brazil, Australia, and the United States, which shows the biggest potential with at least six specific coal pipelines in the planning stages. The crude oil problem in the United States combined with the fact that most of the US 30% of the world's coal reserves are 200-1000 miles from the market, make coal slurry pipeline transportation particularly important in the Unites States. Alternative carrier liquids for coal, including methanol, crude oil, and fuel oil are technically feasible, but will require equipment modification. The historical development of slurry pipelines; required equipment, including coal grinding and slurrying, agitated tanks for slurry storage, pumps and valves, and recent improvements in such equipment; and obstacles to coal slurry pipelines in the United States, including right-of-way across railroad lines and water availability are discussed.
