A discharge model of the grid-collector region of a planar Cs-Ba tacitron using a thick, low transparency grid was developed. Preliminary estimates of the electron temperature and plasma density in the GC discharge during {open_quotes}slow quenching{close_quotes} show that they increased from {approximately}12,000K and {approximately}3{times}10{sup 13}cm{sup {minus}3} to {gt}30,000K and {approximately}2{times}10{sup 14}cm{sup {minus}3} at the time extinguishing occurred, respectively, showing a qualitatively agreement with experimental results. Future results from the model will be used to obtain a quantitative understanding of the extinguishing processes during {open_quotes}{ital slow quenching}{close_quotes} of the GC discharge. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
