Drilling technology and equipment innovations are expanding at a high rate, with new modes of operation surfacing in every facet of the industry. This article features some of the technology that has emerged during the past year, as it applies to various operations both on the surface and downhole. The emphasis this year is on economical, more efficient rigs, and also on rig mobility. High technology also is appearing in the oil field with automated rigs, computer-enhanced telemetry systems, and sophisticated downhole tools. High lighted here are recent developments in: mud weight measurement; drill bits; rig data telemetry; hand-held computer cementing programs; MWD systems; and specialized onshore and offshore rigs.
