Governance of energy: problems, prospects, and underlying issues

Book ·
OSTI ID:6275639
There are fundamental problems connected with the conception and realization of democracy and governance in a post-industrial society such as that of the United States. The definition, organization, and allocation of energy as a basic resource provides a case study of these dilemmas, as well as a crucial entry point for general questions about social organization and social design. In this book, Dr. Burton formulates a political perspective on energy. He raises important questions, suggests alternative possibilities, and criticizes historic beliefs and patterns of action in an attempt to open a national dialogue on his unique approach to energy analysis. He urges that we rethink some rather basic views about nature, society, and politics within the context of the energy problem. The study discusses energy issues in terms of analysis, planning, allocation of resources, and behavior change as they affect both a variety of special social actors and the public at large. Energy from this perspective becomes a political problem at every possible level - from the interpersonal to the global. The book is intended for a general, but knowledgeable audience. 224 references, 40 figures.
