Bilayer solution chemistry in disk micelles of Type II DM phases. Effects of micelle size and simple counterions
Three Type II DM phases have been prepared with the same mole fraction of all components but differing in the chemical identity of one simple counter- and co-ion. The degree of order profiles of the major component amphiphile dodecanoate, minor component decanol, and guest component decyl sulfate have been measured under identical conditions for the 3 nematic phases. When degree of order profiles and ratios for a single amphiphile are used in the 3 systems, the mean micelle size is affected by the counterion but not the intramolecular conformational equilibria for the charged amphiphiles. Decanol chains undergo minor alterations in the trans/Gauche equilibria provoke by the counterion change. 18 references.
