The information reported by Shell Development Co. represents the first deepwater hurricane data on waves and winds that have been gathered in the Gulf of Mexico. They are also the first hurricane data collected from more than one point during the passage of a hurricane. The techniques used to analyze wave-height and wave-period data from the analog records compare favorably with those techniques that calculate significant wave heights from the spectral density function. The spectral density function proves to be a good indicator of the energy of the storm and of how that energy affects a particular location. Hindcasting the storm with the techniques described provides an understanding of the wave heights and wave periods adequate for the needs of offshore drilling and production technology.
