South Africa reveals it had six nuclear weapons until 1990

In a major statement on its past nuclear weapons program, South Africa revealed on March 24, 1993 that they had assembled six fission weapons prior to 1990, when Pretoria terminated its weapons program and dismantled all the weapons. South Africa acceded to the NPT on July 10, 1991 and concluded an agreement with the IAEA for full-scope safeguards on September 16, 1991. The IAEA reactions to the statement is briefly discussed.
