Twenty-four 1981 through 1984 model year light-duty vehicles and light-duty trucks were tested to determine the force required to overcome the sum of aero-dynamic drag, tire rolling resistance and other frictional losses. The primary purpose of this testing was to compare the results from production vehicles with information submitted by the manufacturers for the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) emission certification and fuel economy programs. Reevaluation of EPA's entire alternate road-load procedure was a secondary goal.
