Operational problems experienced by urban transit systems are examined, and some remedial measures are identified. Problems in the three environments in which urban transit systems operate include: cost of physical change, concentration of people and vehicles, and traffic control in the central business district; tidal traffic demands and strip development in major traffic corridors; and low density development and poor access to transit lines in suburban areas. Transit problem solutions include: improvement of subway system quality; use of light rail technology; improvement of bus technology; and employment of peoplemover systems. Effective solutions to current and future urban transit problems require better applications of existing technology and planning powers. (2 tables)
