Parameters of the s-wave component of the pion-nucleus optical potential

The difficulties in the theoretical interpretation of the phenomenological parameters of the s-wave component of the pion-nucleus optical potential are discussed. The one-nucleon and two-nucleon parameters of the potential for scattering of slow pions by nuclei are calculated, and the importance of taking into account the polarization of the nuclear medium and the nucleon--nucleon correlations is noted. The uncertainties in the identification of the one-nucleon and two-nucleon dispersive terms of the optical potential are discussed. The importance of taking into account the off-mass-shell behavior of the pion-nucleon amplitude in the calculation of the two-nucleon parameters of the optical potential is emphasized.
