Characterization of asphaltene cracked oils by catalytic hydrotreating

Conference · · Am. Chem. Soc., Div. Pet. Chem., Prepr.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6272541
A Khafji vacuum residue, a typical oil produced in the Middle East, was used as a feedstock. Presented are the characteristics of oils produced by a pilot plant using the Asphaltenic Bottom Cracking (ABC) and solvent deasphalting processes. The ABC catalyst was Chiyoda's propietary one. The commercial hydrodesulfurization catalyst was nickel-cobalt-molybdenum supported on alumina. Specific gravity, viscosity, asphaltene content (n-heptane insoluble), Conradson carbon residue and elemental analyses were performed by standard methods. Supplementary data were obtained via vapor pressure osmometry, gel permeation chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and NMR spectrometry. The effect of changes in process conditions on these measured properties is discussed. 11 figures, 4 tables.
