Title: Catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6272361

A process is described for oxidizing carbon monoxide. A gas mixture comprising CO and O/sub 2/ is contacted with a catalyst composition consisting essentially of alumina that has been treated with ammonium thiocyanate and at least one noble metal selected from the group consisting of platinum and palladium, under such reaction conditions as to at least partially convert the CO and O/sub 2/ to CO/sub chi/. The catalyst composition has been prepared by a preparation process comprising the steps of: impregnating a support material comprising alumina with a solution comprising water and dissolved ammonium thiocyanate; heating the material obtained under such conditions as to at least partially dry it; contacting the substantially dried material in with a solution comprising at least one dissolved compound of at least one noble metal selected from the group consisting of platinum and palladium; and heating the material in a reducing gas atmosphere at a temperature in the range of from about 550/sup 0/ to about 700/sup 0/C, and under such conditions as to activate the material and to form the catalyst compositions.
