Static Var Control: dynamic shunt compensation for transmission

Journal Article · · Electr. Forum; (United States)
OSTI ID:6270877

Static Var Control (SVC) equipment combines the elements of shunt reactors and capacitors with high power semiconductor technology to provide automatic control reactive power and gives system planners a cost-effective way of transferring additional power without adding new lines or risking system reliability. SVC equipment responds quickly to vary the reactive current drawn by the combination of capacitors and reactors and to control the transmission bus voltage. The SVC's basic form and performance are described along with the results of operating experience.
