Shear bands in deformed metals

Journal Article · · Scr. Metall.; (United States)
At low to moderate levels of strain (generally < 1.0) and at normal strain rates metals deform by slip or twinning. These processes can be related simply to the crystallography of the component grains. Whether they be etched features, surface relief effects or the dislocation configurations seen in the electron microscope, the manifestations of slip and twinning are easily recognized because of this crystallographic origin. At somewhat higher strain levels instabilities develop and shear bands form. These bands cross grain boundaries without deviation and although they are planar in form the planes involved are related to the specimen geometry and the deformation process rather than to the crystallography of the deforming material. The characteristics of shear bands are determined by many factors which include the method of straining, magnitude, temperature and rate of straining, grain size, crystallographic structure and in fcc metals the microstructure in which they form. This microstructure is determined by the orientation of the grain concerned and the stacking fault energy. This paper's concerned with experimental observations of shear bands, their role in deformation and their significance in the nucleation of recrystallized grains and the development of annealing textures.
